Niet or geen? The rule in one question

"Ik heb niet een fiets." Almost every student says it once. English mostly uses "not". Dutch has two words, niet and geen, and one question tells you which one you need.

The rule

Is there een in front of the noun, or no article at all? Then geen.also with plurals and words like koffie and tijd

Ik heb geen fiets.een fiets, so geen fiets: I don't have a bike

Er zijn geen koekjes meer.plural without an article: there are no cookies left

Ik drink geen koffie.koffie without an article: I don't drink coffee

Everything else: niet.with verbs, adjectives, and after de, het, die, dit, mijn

Ik fiets vandaag niet.niet belongs to the verb: I'm not cycling today

De koffie is niet warm.warm is an adjective

Dat is niet mijn fiets.fiets has mijn in front of it, so niet

Multiple choice

Try it

Choose niet or geen. You'll see right away whether it's correct.

Ik heb vandaag ___ tijd.

Ik begrijp de vraag ___.

Niet likes to sit as far back in the sentence as possible: Ik werk vandaag niet. But three things pull niet forward: an adjective (niet warm), a group with a preposition (niet naar Utrecht) and a second verb (niet gewerkt, niet komen). Niet goes right in front of those.

Fill in

Type niet or geen

Fill in niet or geen.

Ik heb zin in een lange vergadering.

Het is vandaag koud.

Wij hebben kinderen.

Ik ken die man .

Now the tricky part. In a sentence with two verbs, niet goes right in front of the second verb, even when there is a time or an object in the sentence: Ik kan vandaag niet komen. Ze heeft de brief niet gelezen. Only a group with a preposition pulls niet further forward: Ik ben niet naar Utrecht gegaan. Put niet earlier and you say something else: Ik kan niet vandaag komen, maar wel morgen means not today, but tomorrow.
