The Dutch civic integration exam: everything you need to know

Are you from abroad and living in the Netherlands? Then you probably need to pass the civic integration exam (inburgeringsexamen). This exam proves that you can speak Dutch and understand Dutch society.

In this blog, I explain what the civic integration exam is, what components it has, and how to best prepare yourself.

What is the civic integration exam?

The civic integration exam is an official exam from the Dutch government. It is mandatory for most people who came to the Netherlands from outside the EU, have a residence permit, and are between 18 and retirement age.

If you pass the exam, you receive a civic integration diploma. You need this diploma for a permanent residence permit or a Dutch passport.

The components of the exam

The civic integration exam consists of six components and you must pass all of them.

Reading

You read short texts and answer questions. Think of letters, emails, advertisements, and news articles. You need to understand the main message and important details.

Listening

You listen to conversations, announcements, and phone calls. Then you answer questions about what you heard.

Writing

You write short texts, such as an email to a school or a message to your landlord. It's about clear, correct sentences.

Speaking

You talk to a computer. You describe images, answer questions, and have short conversations. This component tests your pronunciation and speaking skills.

Knowledge of Dutch Society (KNM)

This component is not about language, but about the Netherlands itself. You learn about Dutch history, the constitution and democracy, working in the Netherlands, healthcare, and education.

Orientation to the Dutch Labour Market (ONA)

You demonstrate that you know how to find work in the Netherlands. You create a portfolio with your CV, diplomas, and evidence of job application activities.

What language level do you need?

For the civic integration exam, you need at least language level B1. This means you can have everyday conversations, read texts about familiar topics, write simple emails and letters, and understand most things at work or at the doctor's.

Not sure about your level? I'd be happy to help you test your level during a trial lesson.

How do you prepare?

Good preparation is essential. Take lessons with a teacher, because personal feedback makes a big difference. Practice every day, even if it's just 15 minutes. Listen to Dutch podcasts, read news in Dutch, or write a short diary.

Also use official practice material. On the DUO and Inburgeren.nl websites, you can find sample exams. Complete these to get used to the format. And don't forget to practice speaking out loud. The speaking exam is the hardest for many people.

How much time do you have?

You usually get 3 years to pass the civic integration exam, counting from your residence permit. Sometimes you can get an extension, but there are conditions attached.

Don't wait too long to start. The sooner you begin, the more relaxed your learning can be.

What if you don't pass?

Don't panic. You can retake each component. However, you pay exam fees again. That's why good preparation is so important, because it saves you money and stress.

Summary

The civic integration exam consists of six components: reading, listening, writing, speaking, KNM, and ONA. You need language level B1 and usually have 3 years. With the right guidance and daily practice, you can definitely pass.
